Technologies : PHP

Brighton's PHP developers/coders

For small/simple web applications, or database-driven websites with existing hosting constraints, PHP is a good alternative to Java or Ruby on Rails. And since the advent of frameworks like CakePHP a few years ago, PHP is increasingly used to create larger more sophisticated web applications.

PHP has been around since 1995. It's very widely used - perhaps due to its widespread availability as the primary scripting language on low-cost web hosts.

By 1998, with the release of PHP 3, PHP had some basic object-oriented programming facilities in place, and it started to become more viable as a fully-fledged platform for creating complex web applications.

In recent years, various web application frameworks based on PHP have sprung up - kind of PHP versions of Ruby on Rails. This has brought PHP back onto the table for serious web developers used to 'grown up' web development platforms like Java servlets and Rails.

PHP is also the technology behind many of the most popular open source blogging systems (e.g. WordPress), Content Management systems (e.g. Joomla and Drupal), and shopping carts (e.g. OpenCart).
