Back of the Net

The goalie from Back of the Net

Back of the net is a football-themed Flash game that we developed for BBC Learning English (part of the BBC World Service).

The launch of the game was timed to coincide with the start of the 2006 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The challenge was to come up with gameplay that was intuitive, easy to learn and ‘footbally’ without detracting too much from the educational quiz format that the game would be used for.

Danny did most of the coding and Antonio created some lovely original cartoon graphics.

Look out for little comedy touches like the goalie's hands getting bigger as time goes on!

The game was a big success and BBC Learning English came back for more; in 2009 we delivered 4 new variations on the game, with a new title - Beat the Keeper.
